048. Navigating Grief & Loss in the Workplace
Thursday Mar 28, 2024
Thursday Mar 28, 2024
Grieving and coping with a loss while still having to work do NOT mix, amirite? This can be so, so difficult, so we’re getting into it and talking about it today.Having to continue showing up at our job as we’re going through a loss is by far one of the most physically and emotionally taxing things that someone grieving has to go through. We might not have the option to stop working as we need to support ourselves or our family, but trying to do our work effectively and be a (somewhat) fully functioning human being can be one of the most uncomfortable, distracting, and overwhelming things we must endure. Meanwhile, your world is crumbling around you. In this episode, we will:
Chat about and validate how difficult it can be to continue working while grieving a loss (whether we’re in the process of loss, or it already happened)
What this experience can look and feel like.
Chat about ways to cope as you journey through this emotionally taxing time.
NOTE: Even if coping with a loss at work isn’t relevant to you right now, I hope you tune in because you might be able to apply some of this episode to your grieving journey—especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed with balancing your grief and daily demands, whatever they may be. 047. Navigating Job Loss, Self-Worth & Finding Your Purpose
Thursday Mar 21, 2024
Thursday Mar 21, 2024
I wanted to hold a special space on the podcast for a loss that’s very important to recognize: the loss of a job.
Losing a job is HARD! And let’s be real, whether it’s one you genuinely enjoy or one you’re sort of “meh” about, the shock, discomfort, anxiety, and worry this can cause is undeniable.
The most stress-inducing aspect of losing a job for many of us is probably the need for a stable income to support yourself or your family. But there’s so much more to this type of loss, too. We might attach a lot of our identity to our job, treasure our colleagues, deeply enjoy the work we do, love the company… the list goes on.
The approach I wanted to take with this episode is not only to validate and acknowledge how difficult this is, but to talk about ways to cope with this loss the best we can.
That said, I wanted to take it a step further and touch on how this grief can affect our psyche and self-worth. And to build on that, we’ll finish it out with how we can reframe our mindset if this does happen to us, and how we can move forward from there with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

046. Busting Common Grief Myths with Shea Wingate, Part 1
Thursday Mar 14, 2024
Thursday Mar 14, 2024
Let’s bust some common grief myths today, my friend! We’re chatting with Shay Wingate. She’s a Licensed Therapist and Grief Coach, and a fellow griever just like me (and probably you!). She has actually graced the podcast in the past, and I’m super excited to have her back for this little series that we're doing on grief myths we constantly hear about as Grief Educators, and grievers ourselves. We wanted to make these episodes as bite-sized for you as possible, so this little series is going to be split into three parts. Today is part one of three—stay tuned for more coming soon!Shea created this awesome Grief Myths Mini Series (details are linked below!), but with that in mind, we thought this would be an awesome opportunity to come together and dispel some of these. We’re having like a fun, light-hearted, high level conversation and covering these myths today:
Everything happens for a reason
Time heals all wounds
There are 5 stages of grief
Your loved one wouldn't want you to be sad
These myths are things that can really get us stuck in our grief, so I think it's really worth talking about! Let’s dig in…

045. Feeling Like We’re Moving Backwards in Our Grief (and How to Cope!)
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
Do you ever feel like you're moving backward in your grief? Worry not, my friend. You're not, and we're going to chat about why in this episode!I’ve had countless people come to me with feeling like they’re moving backward in their grief journey, and this is a legitimate concern! Why? 1) It’s stressful! We worry that there’s something wrong with us or we're "grieving wrong". 2) There's concern this is going to be a permanent state and that we won't "get through it". 3) We might worry this negativity will always haunt us, and this moving backward feeling will always be on our toes. But what if I told you there’s just no such thing? We'll talk about this, why this happens, and ways to cope. Because grieving is a unique and non-linear process, and as something that comes and goes in intensity, experiencing setbacks is a normal part of the journey. So, let's dig into this together! 044. Understanding and Coping with Emotions as we Grieve
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
There are a lot of misconceptions about how we feel and process our emotions, but this is a massive key to coping with our grief and unlocking this full, intentional life we want to live that I’m always going on about!I wanted this quick conversation to be about why we grieve the way we do. Why it’s so emotional, why we can feel stuck, why it can feel irrational. We’re not just validating your feelings here, we’re digging deeper about WHY exactly grief hurts so bad.Why it burns and aches in places we didn’t know we had within us, why that’s sometimes hard to understand, and why it can be so difficult to navigate on a day-to-day basis. But when we can better understand the “why” behind this, we can better understand the emotions we’re feeling and why they’re coming up so strong. That, my friend, is when we can start feeling unstuck, more patient with our grief, and even hopeful that this process will evolve and shift with time and the right grief work.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 043. Making Decisions While Grieving a Loved One
Thursday Feb 22, 2024
Thursday Feb 22, 2024
Having to make decisions when a loved one’s health is declining, or even after they've died, is not only difficult but is something we can question over and over again. We can question whether our decisions about things are the right ones through the fog of our grief, and not even want the weight of that responsibility, right? So, if we’re faced with decisions like this, what do we do? What do we do if we HAVE to make decisions, be it about their health, their estate, legal issues, decisions that affect our family, etc.?Your gain from this episode will be to join me in identifying how and why making decisions around our loved ones can be one of the most confounding parts of the process before they die, and even after they die. You know I’m all about coping tools, so we’ll also get into some ways to better cope with this, feel a little better about it, and find some peace with it all.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 042. Meeting Our Grief Where It’s At with Grant Garry
Thursday Feb 15, 2024
Thursday Feb 15, 2024
I’m thrilled to share the stage today with Filmmaker, Actor, Singer, and Certified Grief Educator, Grant Garry.Grant is the director of the documentary "Meet Me Where I Am”, which explores the topic of grief through individual stories of loss, love, and hope.It also focuses on how to "be there" for grievers, and what to do/say and what not to do/say. It features some really incredible people and voices in the grief space, and even some famous faces you would recognize that are being brutally honest and open with their grief which is SO refreshing! I was lucky enough to get a little sneak preview, and I genuinely loved this documentary so, so much. I might have shed a happy tear... or five! This film addresses topics and situations that truly need to be recognized and discussed more, and I am so here for it.It’s so encouraging to see what Grant is doing here in directing this highly-needed film to help normalize grief. This conversation today is so needed in my opinion, and I think Grant has such a unique perspective on grief having been a part of this filmmaking process. I hope you enjoy it and that it resonates with you! 041. 3 Things I’ve Learned at 33 Years Old
Thursday Feb 08, 2024
Thursday Feb 08, 2024
I'm so excited to bring you a special episode this week in honor of me turning 33 on February 2nd: 3 Things I've Learned at 33 Years Old.
Truthfully, there are a lot of things I've learned in my 33 years here Earthside so far. But, given I can't talk your ear off for too long, I narrowed it down to three major life lessons that I can't wait to share with you.
Without giving too much away up front, we're digging into topics like:
The timing of things in life and “shoulda, woulda, couldas”.
Understanding hustle culture.
Moving “forward” vs. moving “on”.
Tapping into and owning our unique magic that we bring.
The value of being open-minded and open to change.
How we're not guaranteed anything in life, and how we cope with adversity in terms of growth and personal development.
I think it's important to do a reflection every now and again to see how far we've come, what we're learning along the way, and the ways we've grown with the beauty of age.
Because truly, as unsettling as getting older can be at times, the wisdom we can gain from more time and life experiences is second to none. It's something I wouldn't change for the world, and I hope this episode resonates with you today!
Once you listen, if there's anything that jumped out at you or is something you resonate with, I'd love to hear from you! 040. Growing & Learning Through Living with Grief with Karla Helbert, Part 2
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
We're back with part two with this incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate soul on the podcast, Karla Helbert. She's a licensed professional counselor, Compassionate Bereavement Care provider, certified yoga instructor, and award-winning author.
In this transformative part two of our chat, we get into a comprehensive talk on grief, its intricacies, and coping mechanisms that I have no doubt will help you immensely. Karla and I explore the complexities of human relationships with lost loved ones and the struggle to maintain a connection in their absence. We cover topics such as the trauma of grief, and the importance of emotional growth to develop a "new" relationship with those no longer physically present. We also touch on my personal experience of using a medium to connect with my parents, which has actually been a pivotal component in my healing journey. Karla highlights practices of therapy, the need for support in the grieving process and how to tap into this, as well as the significance of attachment we have with our loved ones and how this plays a complex role in our healing journey.
If your grief is affecting your day-to-day or preventing you from truly moving forward with your loss as a part of your story—not something that overcomes or overwhelms you—I truly hope you take a listen to this one!

039. Growing & Learning Through Living with Grief with Karla Helbert, Part 1
Thursday Jan 25, 2024
Thursday Jan 25, 2024
Today's guest, Karla Helbert, has a breadth of knowledge when it comes to understanding and coping with loss. She's a licensed professional counselor, Compassionate Bereavement Care provider, certified yoga instructor, an award-winning author... the list goes on.But, she has her own experience with grief, too. Her life completely changed when her first born child died of a brain tumor in 2006. Her specialty now is working with those affected by trauma and traumatic death. She focuses on having compassion for the self in grief, and allowing feelings rather than judging our experiences. Learning to cultivate a "strong back”, as she calls it, and being able to grow into your personal truth independent of what others' say you "should" do. This is a major skill that helps us as we grow and learn through the process of living with grief, and we talk about that a lot in both part 1 and 2 of this episode with Karla. This mindset resonated with me so deeply as it’s very aligned with my philosophy on grief as well. Remember, part 2 of this conversation is coming next week!

038. Creating a Routine and Why It’s Important in Grief
Thursday Jan 11, 2024
Thursday Jan 11, 2024
While we continue to welcome the new year, I wanted to use this opportunity to talk about the importance of creating a routine. But, as we always do, we're putting a griefy spin on this topic!
Your gain will be to understand how and why a routine is so critical, especially for those who are grieving. And yes, there can definitely be some major benefits to this… it's not simply to add more to your heavy plate!
The thing I love about creating a routine we can count on—no matter if it's one step or seven—is two-fold.
It can bring you back to the present moment when things are feeling overwhelming.
It can provide us a sense of structure and control in a time that can feel very out of control. When we’re in the process of losing something or someone, or already have, that loss can strip away a lot of our sense of control. From there, we might wonder how we’re ever going to get this control back.
When you fill your routine with things that are uplifting and beneficial to your health and wellness, you're more likely to want to get up and do them instead of wanting to go back to bed, right?
So, we’ll deep dive into the reasons for this and how exactly a solid routine can and will help you in your grief journey. Truly, a routine I love and am empowered by has absolutely changed the course of my healing journey.

037. Determining Your ”Word” & Setting Intentions for the Year
Thursday Jan 04, 2024
Thursday Jan 04, 2024
It's officially a new year, a new breath of fresh air, new vibes, maybe a renewed sense of self or reset moving forward… Or, perhaps you’re still struggling with some grief and loss from the previous year or even further back than that. Maybe this is still holding you up a bit, and you’re feeling stuck going into this year. That’s okay! Just because a new year arrives doesn’t mean all of us feel this blank slate. We don't always experience this profound and wonderful new beginning. It's not always that straightforward, right?Today, your gain from this episode is to not just learn how to set intentions for the year (you can Google that, right?). We’ll dig into why intentions are so powerful, and how they can set us up with a better mindset in a more impactful way. We'll also talk about how and why determining a “word” of the year is such an awesome practice—especially while dealing with some form of grief. If this feels intimidating or like it's too much, or if it feels like you’re already behind… release that right now. You’re not behind, you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. You’re not in a deficit. This is something you can do on YOUR terms in the way that it feels most aligned to you. This is a zero-pressure zone! All I want to help you do is begin this process if you need a pick-me-up, guidance, or inspiration—whenever you choose to do this practice. Work with me:

What is Losses Become Gains?
After losing both of my parents to cancer within six months and my fur baby months later, there came a point in my journey of loss where I just knew all of this loss just couldn't be for nothing... it’s pretty simple, really. But getting to this point? Not so easy.
Eventually, I felt called to help people cope and get through their grief, too. I feel your pain, I see you, and I want to provide tools to help. After some time, I knew I had to take some action. Enter—Losses Become Gains.
The name Losses Become Gains came about because I knew, deep down somewhere, I knew there had to be more. A founding principle of LBG is to make this process as human to human as possible, because it's a very human thing to experience loss. This podcast felt like the next natural step.
We're all about learning, growing, and evolving. It’s about understanding our loss, our grief, how this has and will continue to affect us, and taking baby steps to move onward and upward from here. Is it minimizing or moving far away from who or what we’ve lost? Not at all. Really, it’s just comprehending how to find some semblance of peace and a level of acceptance with our losses. It’s how to turn these losses into gains, you feel me?
